Richard.
Congratulations for your professional effort in this carburetor matter.
My Savage has 9,842 miles on it. I think that the problem, with a sticky slide first occurred at about 7,000 miles. The cycle is set up stock. Stock exhaust, and stock carburetor, except for the main jet being changed from the 1997 #145 stock size to a #150 enlargement; also I lowered the float level from specs. I get 55+ miles per gallon.
For A short time I had run with holes drilled into the muffler end plate; that is the reason for changing the main jet to a little bigger size. I did not like the rotor tiller sound and so I plugged the holes. Now, I decided to leave the main jet larger anyway, because it seems to be the correct size. I show no wear on the spark plug with almost 10,000 miles. My carburetor was flooding once and so I checked out the float and needle and needle seat. I bent the float arm for less gas level and have left it that way ever since, because it runs good that way. The White spacer is still in.
After finding out that Honda Gold Wing riders also have a problem with sticky slides, I discovered that the acceptable cure for them is to add 1 oz. of automobile, automatic transmission fluid to each 2.5 gallons of gas. That figures to be .4 oz per 1gal.
